Simplistic yet stylish. That is how you could describe AS Roma’s latest home kit unveiled for the 2015/16 season. When ‘leaked’ images of the kit first appeared on social media many thought it couldn’t be the new official kit but rather a training top. It does give that impression.

With the official press release, Roma are certainly playing the ancient, ‘gladiatorial’ theme. Taking inspiration from the armour worn by Roman soldiers, the kit aims to create a “powerful” look on the pitch, with players “dressed for battle, ready to perform as a “legion”. The crewneck collar replicates the neckline on the iron chest armour worn by soldiers in the Roman army more than 2,000 years ago.
The photoshoot features Kostas Manolas, Radja Nainggolan, Francesco Totti, Daniele De Rossi and Alessandro Florenzi, with the players superimposed in front of the Arco di Costantino, a triumphal arch in Rome found between the Colosseum and Palatine Hill.
The colours are the traditional AS Roma red – although the main red looks darker than last years kit, which is a nod back to the traditional kits of old – and features a darker shade of the red running along a panel on the shoulder blades and sleeves. This is aimed to enhance the presence of the shirt and give it that ‘armour’ feel, but it is a step away from the traditional kit appearance which in turn makes it look like a training top.
For the first time, the numbers on the back of the shirt are made up of graphic print which pays tribute to the Italian capital’s heralded architectural wonders and ancient streets (see below) – another nod to the old. This is a nice touch which will be very interesting to see in more detail. The font is a modern, stylish font, different from the ‘American Captain’ font on last years jersey.
All in all its a nice, stylish jersey. An upgrade on last seasons rather bland effort, it has some nice features like the collar and details on the numbers. You still feel there’s room for improvement, not to mention a sponsor, but its quite a polished kit which will no doubt have the players pumped and ready to slay their opponents.
